The art of Kokedama

Kokedama, meaning “moss ball” in Japanese, originated as a minimalist bonsai practice where plants were grown in compact soil spheres and wrapped in natural fibers or moss, allowing them to live untethered to pots and closer to their natural form. Traditionally, kokedama honors patience, balance, and the relationship between hand, plant, and time. At Planifolia, we carry this tradition forward while adding our own layer of intention: each kokedama is wrapped by hand in jute using a living, responsive sequence rather than a fixed pattern. Our wraps follow the rhythm of tension, release, and balance unique to each plant, making every piece truly one of one—designed not just to hold soil, but to tell the story of how it was made.

Watering Your Kokedama

Watering needs can vary depending on plant variety and environmental conditions, but as a general guide, we recommend watering each kokedama every 3–4 weeks when kept indoors. If your kokedama is kept outdoors, check moisture levels more frequently—about every 2–3 weeks, as sun and airflow can cause it to dry faster. To water, fully submerge the kokedama in a bowl or sink overnight, allowing the moss and soil to absorb water evenly from the inside out. After soaking, gently lift and allow excess water to drain before returning it to its place.
